summer = movies!

This week I managed to watch Les Mis and the Hobbit, both of which I spent last year eagerly awaiting. I think the only reason I didn't see them as soon as they came out was because I had work . . . and the Hobbit was booked out for the first three days (as it should be!)

I heard some complaints about Les Mis being too long, Russell Crowe not being a good enough singer or fiery enough Javert, etc. etc. I was a bit surprised that they felt the need to put in a new song (didn't they have enough already??) but it fitted well, I thought. And I discovered that the actor in Pillars of the Earth can sing (well!) and plays Marius - his name is Eddie Redmayne, and he has red hair (some of the time) :D Oh, the puns. And while Russell Crowe wasn't exactly a strong singer, it didn't really detract from my viewing experience. Anne Hathaway was AMAZING!

(To be honest, it would be quite hard to disappoint me with Les Mis - I grew up listening to it, and got to be in the orchestra for our AWESOME school production two years ago.)

And the Hobbit just blew me away, it really did. I'm not sure why Peter Jackson feels he needs to make it three movies, let alone a trilogy of almost-three-hour movies (again), but honestly? I don't care. ALL THE LOTR!! Sure, he's taking some liberties with the book, but he's using Tolkien's notes and I trust his judgment. As long as it feels authentic and has wonderful music and Weta Workshop magic, I'll be happy. And oh, Martin Freeman and Richard Armitage, you are my heroes <3 I cannot WAIT until the next movie where Smauglock Holmes Benedict Cumberbatch gets to say something!
