and so it begins

Currently I'm trying not to give myself a headache over uni starting again - DESPITE the fact that timetabling hates me still and won't give me the lectures for one of my courses. Seriously, WTF. Lectures are kind of IMPORTANT, uni, I would appreciate knowing when and where they are! The course has got the lab and a tutorial on the timetable, but no lectures to be seen. Hopefully it will not be this disorganised once things get going - I am looking forward to learning about plants and ecology some more!

However, it is still holidays, so I have plenty of things to be happy about :D I managed to convince [personal profile] fahye to watch Life of Pi in 3D with me and OHH, THE PRETTIES. I admit I haven't read the book (bad Laurel) but my trusty bookworm friend says it's very philosophical, not what I usually read, so probably not ruined forever by watching the movie first (fingers crossed). And the movie was beautiful, both visually and in the way they handled the events - it never felt too slow or too rushed. [personal profile] fahye did say she thought the book handled the alternate story better, but she couldn't remember (hadn't read it for a while).

I also rented/borrowed a stack of books and movies to get through, including Sunshine (directed by Danny Boyle). I don't watch horror much, so some of the more grisly effects were shocking (it claimed to be MA15+ for 'strong language' and nothing else. Yeah, right) but overall it was such a well-made film. Great ideas, good thriller plot, lots of actors I like, and really effective use of the camera and special effects. It took my breath away, particularly all of the second half! I don't care if the science of it is completely shot, it's sci-fi. It's entitled to take liberties if what it creates from them is something this amazing (in my opinion).

One of the books I got from the library was Garth Nix's latest (?) book A Confusion of Princes and I REALLY liked it. I was a bit taken aback by the beginning, where the MC helpfully explains a lot of the world-building, but on second thought I don't think it was handled badly, I just wasn't expecting it. And there was plenty about the world (galaxy, really) left to get revealed slowly as the naive MC gets some wake-ups calls. It was thrilling and tackled morals well and was, above all, interesting.

And finally, I got some writing done on my coast holiday (not my WIP, naturally), so I'll post that once it has been beta'd :D Again, it's not fanfic, not even inspired by a movie this time . . . but I hope it's enjoyable nonetheless.
