Dear Yuletide Author - 2021
Hello Yuletide writer!
Yuletide is one of my highlights of the year - what's better to avoid the summer heat (I'm an Aussie) than staying indoors and writing/reading stories? First off, I want you to enjoy yourself, so if you have an AMAZING IDEA then please go ahead and write it! These are just some starting points if you want inspiration :)
Hawkeye (Comics) [Clint and/or Lucky]
"Adventures, domestic fluff, backstories ... I'm happy if you write just Clint or Lucky, or throw in Kate/other people too."
I'd love some Clint backstory (haven't read any other comics, just this one and the MCU movies), or more crazy missions with Kate. Does Lucky meet Goose the cat/flerken? (or the Horrible Goose?) Does Lucky go on vigilante missions of his own? I'm happy to go with whatever plotbunny appears in your brain!
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) [Worldbuilding]
"Show me more of this bustling galaxy! Equally happy to see Valerian and Laureline/other canon characters/original characters here"
I honestly don't have much more to add, besides pointing out the RICH OPPORTUNITIES for crossovers (totally optional). Were there other diplomatic incidents in Alpha's history? What is it like to grow up there - do people stick with their own species or mingle freely? What is it like to work in the Big Market?
The Left-Handed Booksellers of London - Garth Nix [Worldbuilding]
"What is the mysterious Grail-keeper in Silvermere? What other secrets does the St Jacques clan hold? Are there similar organisations in other parts of the world? Pick your favourite mythological figure and go wild!"
Again, I don't mind where you take this (although a crossover with some other UK magicians/peacekeepers/magic police would be amazing!) Fill in some of those intruiging details we only saw hints about - the Old World, the booksellers, Silvermere and the grail.
Saga (Comics) [Marko, Alana]
"Backstory for these two! We've seen a little of Marko's childhood - what about Alana's? What is it like on their home worlds?"
I am madly in love with these two, so I'd be happy with anything you write, really. Especially crossovers with other space-based fandoms! But backstory would be wonderful. This is such an amazing world - but we've seen very little of Landfall and Wreath themselves! The war has been outsourced, but how much pressure is there back home for young people to contribute to it? Was Alana ever conflicted about it growing up? What were Marko's schooldays in a magic-wielding society like? Feel free to add as many other characters (canon or your own!) as you like!
N.B. Regarding spoilers: I've only read up to Volume 9 at the time of writing this letter - I'm not following individual issues, so please set the story before or up to the events at the end of the ninth volume.
Fence (Comics) [Nicholas, Seiji]
"Slice-of-life, childhood moments, wild schemes ... these boys are a disaster waiting to happen!"
Ah, contradictory personalities forced to share a room! What, if anything, can they learn from each other? What crazy shenanigans will they get up to? What sore spots do they have from their pasts that the other might tred on and/or heal? Feel free to add other characters in as well!
N.B. Regarding spoilers: I've only read up to Volume 4 at the time of writing this letter - I'm not following individual issues, so please set the story before or up to the events at the end of the fourth volume. I have also read the first Fence novel by Sarah Rees Brennan, so feel free to draw inspiration from that (but don't spoil me for the second novel!)
In general:
I like humour (dark or light), wordplay, clever people being clever, worldbuilding, action and so on. I like playing around with genre tropes and good old-fashioned romance/friendship/family feels. Any crossovers/AUs/gen/slash/het you feel like throwing in there is fine!
I don't like explicit torture descriptions, or extensive sex scenes - people getting hurt or horny is fine, but please avoid graphic details. I do prefer happy or at least bittersweet endings (but I won't be devastated if your story demands something else!)
