 Hello Yuletide writer!

Yuletide is one of my highlights of the year - what's better to avoid the summer heat (I'm an Aussie) than staying indoors and writing/reading stories? First off, I want you to enjoy yourself, so if you have an AMAZING IDEA then please go ahead and write it! These are just some starting points if you want inspiration :)

Hawkeye - Matt Fraction (Comics) [Clint and/or Lucky]

"Adventures, domestic fluff, backstories ... I'm happy if you write just Clint or Lucky, or throw in Kate/other people too."

I'd love some Clint backstory (haven't read any other comics, just this one and the MCU movies), or more crazy missions with Kate. Does Lucky meet Goose the cat/flerken? (or the Horrible Goose?) Does Lucky go on vigilante missions of his own? I'm happy to go with whatever plotbunny appears in your brain!

The Left-Handed Booksellers of London - Garth Nix [Worldbuilding]

"What is the mysterious Grail-keeper in Silvermere? What other secrets does the St Jacques clan hold? Are there similar organisations in other parts of the world? Pick your favourite mythological figure and go wild!"

Again, I don't mind where you take this (although a crossover with some other UK magicians/peacekeepers/magic police would be amazing!) Fill in some of those intruiging details we only saw hints about - the Old World, the booksellers, Silvermere and the grail.

The Queen's Thief - Megan Whalen Turner [Eugenides, Eddis | Helen]

"These two have such a deep bond of trust, but we hardly see them interacting. Did they hit it off right away as children, or did they have a rockier path to friendship? How has their relationship changed over the years?"

I'm keen to see scenes from their childhood, but anything where these two are leaning on each other in a dangerous and complicated world would make me happy. (Please note I have only read the first four books of the series, which is why I'm asking for backstory more than present/future fic! I'd rather avoid spoilers for Thick as Thieves and Return of the Thief).

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) [Worldbuilding]

"Show me more of this bustling galaxy! Equally happy to see Valerian and Laureline/other canon characters/original characters here."

I honestly don't have much more to add, besides pointing out the RICH OPPORTUNITIES for crossovers (totally optional). Were there other diplomatic incidents in Alpha's history? What is it like to grow up there - do people stick with their own species or mingle freely? What is it like to work in the Big Market?

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street - Natasha Pulley [Thaniel, Keita Mori]

"I'd like to see more of these two just being comfortable together, and/or learning more about each other - either through domestic scenes (with Six and Katsu, if you like) or more adventures!"

This book is so beautifully written, but there always seems to be something getting in between these two! What happens when they can have a quiet moment together? How does their little family work? Maybe Six finds a mystery to solve ... (Please note I have read the sequel, The Lost Future of Pepperharrow, so you can include details from that story as well if you like).

In general:

I like humour (dark or light), wordplay, clever people being clever, worldbuilding, action and so on. I like playing around with genre tropes and good old-fashioned romance/friendship/family feels. Any crossovers/AUs/gen/slash/het you feel like throwing in there is fine!

I don't like explicit torture descriptions, or extensive sex scenes - people getting hurt or horny is fine, but please avoid graphic details. I do prefer happy or at least bittersweet endings (but I won't be devastated if your story demands something else!)

I am definitely open to receiving treats <3

You can look at my AO3 bookmarks/stories to see what I like (or my journal, but it's been neglected lately...) Thank you for sharing my love of these fandoms, dear writer - have fun! Happy Yuletide!

So I'm feeling a little braindead after spending a week trawling through Yuletide and doing not much else - but it's OH SO SATISFYING. And I've almost finished watching Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrell so I can read all those fics as well! (Never got round to reading the book, that many pages is pretty damn daunting . . . but if it's as full of CREEPY FAIRY MAGIC as the TV series then perhaps I should try it!)

Also, doing nothing but reading lovely stories does help distract me from the fact that, now I've graduated (!!), I actually don't know what is going to happen in 2016. It'll start with MORE GECKOS and hopefully more papers published, but after that is up for grabs. PhD, probably, but when and on what?? The big bad world of Working For a Living, Quick Find a Job is beckoning and I may have to dip my toes in before scurrying back to Research Studenthood o.O

BUT STAR WARS CAME OUT AND IT IS AMAAAAZZING AHHHH Rey and Finn and Poe are SO ADORABLE OMG :DD Also emo Kylo Ren is great too, he's at least one up on Grandad by being amusingly whiney. And BB-8 kicks a surprising amount of ass for being so impractically shaped!

Since I don't have a fixed plan of ALL THE GECKO RESEARCH EVER this year, I really must get more writing done. I will definitely finish my long WIP and then see which of my snippets can be pounced on and given a *cohesive* plot. In between watching all the TV shows I need to catch up on!

Anyway, Yuletide happened, and I got two lovely little Treasure Planet fics:

An ongoing skillset expansion (1186 words). Great conversation between Sarah and Amelia regarding baby woes, with wondeful irritation on Amelia's part at her offspring's lack of military precision.

In a quiet evening (1044 words). Another post-fic with Amelia and Doppler figuring out life with babies.

For my assignment I got to revisit one of my favourite childhood fantasy worlds, and have a good roll around in FAMILY FEELS.

Homecoming (5025 words) - Emelan - Tamora Pierce. I haven't had to give equal space to four main characters before, so this was an interesting challenge, but so much fun! I devoured every Tamora Pierce I could get my hands on in high school, and this is the first time I've written something in either universe.

And the treat I wrote was basically me enjoying Diaval being such a snark XD

raise that bird up high (1907 words) - Maleficent (2014). Long-suffering Diaval is dragged into more adventures with Maleficent. Plus dragons!

Hello dear Yuletide writer!

Yuletide is one of my favourite things about the summer holidays (yes I'm Australian), and I hope you enjoy yourself! First of all, if you have an idea for an amazing story that you're dying to write, please go ahead and write that! These are just some starting points if you want them :D

It's finally here, the big scary Honours year when I find out if I'm cracked up for scientific research! Looking good, so far - I have a very nice supervisor, and very cute animals to focus my project on! (Geckos, people. GECKOS!! Unlikely to still be alive, for the most part, but still SO CUTE).

I'll just have to hope my brain can cope with an extra-long year of study - once again I'm working at CSIRO (this time getting paid, thank goodness), this time on fossilised beetles! Whole different kettle of fish here, as they're rather crumbly and I'm terrified of destroying the 150-million-something-year-old fossils o.O At least they're longer than a millimetre this time!

And, of course, it wouldn't be summer holidays if I wasn't watching the wonderful Boxing Day releases - Hobbit 3, thoroughly enjoyable finale (especially the bit with Billy Connolly! No idea what he was doing there, but he was HILARIOUS). Planning to see Big Hero 6 with [personal profile] fahye this arvo, can't wait!

I did Yuletide again, though it was a near thing - I wasn't sure if I'd have time to do my recipient justice with my CSIRO job taking up so much time. But I signed up, and naturally, my assignment was released just before my last round of uni exams. It was VERY hard convincing my brain to memorise parasite life cycles instead of romping around with the Mad Hatter >.>

First, though, my incredible gift:

But Love Is the Sky and I Am for You (2910 words) - The Book Thief - Markus Zusak. Dear GOD (or should that be Death?), this fic is beautifully written. I asked for Liesel and Max healing by making stories together, and that's exactly what I got. Also, largely thanks to Zusak being an Aussie too, they get to heal in the glorious Australian sunshine!

My main story was mostly jotted down in a notebook during my mad rush 5 days of exams - and then typed up afterwards. I adore Hatter, though, so I didn't mind him distracting me from uniwork too much.

dare you to move (like today never happened) (4051 words) - Alice (2009). I love this show to pieces, but I've never written fic for it before. My recipient just wanted some background, so I picked my favourite character and went for it!

Once again, I only wrote one treat - another crossover, between Black Books and Good Omens. Because I saw the prompt and thought 'hey, I'm sure there's a bit in Good Omens about Aziraphale being a bad-tempered bookshop owner'. And my brain said HEY PRESTO.

From One Professional To Another (727 words) - Black Books/Good Omens. This was SO MUCH FUN to write, I was making myself laugh the whole way through. More fandoms I love but haven't written in before - I really must write more from Crowley's POV, he is delightful.

Hmm, resolutions - I could aim to finish my longest WIP, but with an Honours thesis to do as well that might be tricky. I definitely intend to watch all of Legend of Korra as soon as possible, once I've finished with Torchwood. Oh yes, and another one, courtesy of my ice skating coach - 2015 will be the year of landing double jumps on one foot, apparently. I can already do one, sort of - only another four to go!

So now it's 2014 and I'm officially halfway through my degree, with no idea what it's leading up to (but enjoying the ride). WOOT!

I'm making the most of this week to watch various TV shows (still continuing my Supernatural education, up to season 5 now!) and trawl through the Yuletide sea of awesome stories :D Next week it'll be back to my research project (no summer job this year, haha!) to describe a new genus and species of small brown beetle!

No, no, it's more fun than it sounds. I get to publish a full taxonomic paper in a scientific journal - if I can write it properly, that is :P Although said beetle IS ridiculously tiny (less than a millimetre long, dammit - thank goodness for microscopes!), it's kinda fun poking at one with pins to pull it apart without smashing it entirely (mixed success thus far).

Anyway, now the rest of the world is in 2014, Yuletide reveals are up and I can gush about my wonderful gifts! 2013 was my second Yuletide and even MORE awesome than the first because I got three treats as well as the most heart-wrenching-yet-hilarious S&A main gift!

Full of Promise and Potential (3615 words) - Slings & Arrows - OH GOD this fic is so incredibly true to canon. Beautiful snippets of Darren and Geoffrey being, well, themselves, finding their own styles by ridiculing each other's.

alike in dignity (1108 words) - Slings & Arrows - an immensely funny little treat from Darren's POV. I couldn't really imagine his headspace before, myself, but this is PERFECT.

Names, Rings and Under Things (1893 words) - Kingkiller Chronicles - I asked for Auri backstory and I got it, complete with her take on some of her and Kvothe's conversations! Helped fill in the gaps.

Conspiring for Happiness (100 words) - Italian Job (2003) - I adore this movie, and this cute little drabble managed to catch Stella's badassery admirably.

And finally, my own stories - didn't manage to do more than one treat this time around, despite best intentions! Must do better next Yuletide.

incertae sedis (2854 words) - Are You Alice? - yes, that is Latin, I couldn't resist :D I seem to have a weak spot for Alice-inspired fandoms, particularly when they come furnished with messed up Alices and arguments aplenty. And throwing in a tiny crossover I knew the recipient would like was tons of fun!

awake and unafraid (962 words) - Bourne Movies - I told myself this was a Madness fic (i.e. under 1k) and just managed to restrain it! My brain appears to be wired to producing Bourne crossover treats - this one's within fandom, a little Jason-meets-Aaron/Marta fun. Thanks to [personal profile] fahye, rescuer of missing bags, for the hasty beta!

Hello 2013! Since my summer job is selling diaries and christmas things, I only got Christmas Day and New Year's off - looking forward to *actual* holidays for the second half of January, when I can get some writing done! At the moment, I work in the morning and trawl through the Yuletide recs in the afternoon (one of these days, I'll have time to actually search the collection like normal people do, I'm sure!)

First ever Yuletide was SO MUCH FUN, I only wrote one treat besides my assignment but hopefully I can do better next year!

My assignment: Study in Knives (Demon's Lexicon, 2300 words) some thoughts from Nick and Jamie pre-Surrender, plus a friendship with knives!flashback to Covenant because I couldn't resist :D

My treat: another ringer with the slick trigger finger (Bourne Legacy/James Bond, 550 words) mainly exists because my brain saw the crossover invite and said OMG YES.

My gift: Aftermath by [personal profile] antediluvian (Demon's Lexicon, 2935 words) a completely different Nick and Jamie friendship fic, set after Surrender. Feels so true to canon and made me laugh and flail muchly!

And I'm going to see Les Mis on the weekend! Slowly getting through the list of movies I want to see (only done Wreck-it Ralph with [personal profile] fahye so far: all the video games YES), wish I was making as much progress with my booklist! Ah well, I'll never run out of books to read, and that's not bad :D
laurel_crown: ([Merlin] eye)
Kinda wishing I had some sort of magical powers right now that meant I wouldn't have to study for exams . . . but then they wouldn't let me do any exams, and I MUCH prefer exams to assignments (cause I'm good at studying, even if I don't like it).

Also, I have organised my life extraordinarily well, in that I start my Christmas casual job tomorrow (selling calendars!) - and will from then on be working when I need to be studying. And I have three exams in the first three days of the exam period, because uni timetabling hates me :(

Ehhh, looking forward to 15 days' time when I can finally stop stressing over uni (and stop thinking about physics EVER AGAIN, in particular) and get down to some serious Yuletide-writing, internet procrastinating and having Supernatural marathons with my friend (who is determined to educate me with selected highlights from each season. Current education status: SEASON 1 CLIFFHANGER SDKFLJDFSK)
