 Hello Yuletide writer!

Yuletide is one of my highlights of the year - what's better to avoid the summer heat (I'm an Aussie) than staying indoors and writing/reading stories? First off, I want you to enjoy yourself, so if you have an AMAZING IDEA then please go ahead and write it! These are just some starting points if you want inspiration :)

Hawkeye - Matt Fraction (Comics) [Clint and/or Lucky]

"Adventures, domestic fluff, backstories ... I'm happy if you write just Clint or Lucky, or throw in Kate/other people too."

I'd love some Clint backstory (haven't read any other comics, just this one and the MCU movies), or more crazy missions with Kate. Does Lucky meet Goose the cat/flerken? (or the Horrible Goose?) Does Lucky go on vigilante missions of his own? I'm happy to go with whatever plotbunny appears in your brain!

The Left-Handed Booksellers of London - Garth Nix [Worldbuilding]

"What is the mysterious Grail-keeper in Silvermere? What other secrets does the St Jacques clan hold? Are there similar organisations in other parts of the world? Pick your favourite mythological figure and go wild!"

Again, I don't mind where you take this (although a crossover with some other UK magicians/peacekeepers/magic police would be amazing!) Fill in some of those intruiging details we only saw hints about - the Old World, the booksellers, Silvermere and the grail.

The Queen's Thief - Megan Whalen Turner [Eugenides, Eddis | Helen]

"These two have such a deep bond of trust, but we hardly see them interacting. Did they hit it off right away as children, or did they have a rockier path to friendship? How has their relationship changed over the years?"

I'm keen to see scenes from their childhood, but anything where these two are leaning on each other in a dangerous and complicated world would make me happy. (Please note I have only read the first four books of the series, which is why I'm asking for backstory more than present/future fic! I'd rather avoid spoilers for Thick as Thieves and Return of the Thief).

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) [Worldbuilding]

"Show me more of this bustling galaxy! Equally happy to see Valerian and Laureline/other canon characters/original characters here."

I honestly don't have much more to add, besides pointing out the RICH OPPORTUNITIES for crossovers (totally optional). Were there other diplomatic incidents in Alpha's history? What is it like to grow up there - do people stick with their own species or mingle freely? What is it like to work in the Big Market?

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street - Natasha Pulley [Thaniel, Keita Mori]

"I'd like to see more of these two just being comfortable together, and/or learning more about each other - either through domestic scenes (with Six and Katsu, if you like) or more adventures!"

This book is so beautifully written, but there always seems to be something getting in between these two! What happens when they can have a quiet moment together? How does their little family work? Maybe Six finds a mystery to solve ... (Please note I have read the sequel, The Lost Future of Pepperharrow, so you can include details from that story as well if you like).

In general:

I like humour (dark or light), wordplay, clever people being clever, worldbuilding, action and so on. I like playing around with genre tropes and good old-fashioned romance/friendship/family feels. Any crossovers/AUs/gen/slash/het you feel like throwing in there is fine!

I don't like explicit torture descriptions, or extensive sex scenes - people getting hurt or horny is fine, but please avoid graphic details. I do prefer happy or at least bittersweet endings (but I won't be devastated if your story demands something else!)

I am definitely open to receiving treats <3

You can look at my AO3 bookmarks/stories to see what I like (or my journal, but it's been neglected lately...) Thank you for sharing my love of these fandoms, dear writer - have fun! Happy Yuletide!

So I'm feeling a little braindead after spending a week trawling through Yuletide and doing not much else - but it's OH SO SATISFYING. And I've almost finished watching Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrell so I can read all those fics as well! (Never got round to reading the book, that many pages is pretty damn daunting . . . but if it's as full of CREEPY FAIRY MAGIC as the TV series then perhaps I should try it!)

Also, doing nothing but reading lovely stories does help distract me from the fact that, now I've graduated (!!), I actually don't know what is going to happen in 2016. It'll start with MORE GECKOS and hopefully more papers published, but after that is up for grabs. PhD, probably, but when and on what?? The big bad world of Working For a Living, Quick Find a Job is beckoning and I may have to dip my toes in before scurrying back to Research Studenthood o.O

BUT STAR WARS CAME OUT AND IT IS AMAAAAZZING AHHHH Rey and Finn and Poe are SO ADORABLE OMG :DD Also emo Kylo Ren is great too, he's at least one up on Grandad by being amusingly whiney. And BB-8 kicks a surprising amount of ass for being so impractically shaped!

Since I don't have a fixed plan of ALL THE GECKO RESEARCH EVER this year, I really must get more writing done. I will definitely finish my long WIP and then see which of my snippets can be pounced on and given a *cohesive* plot. In between watching all the TV shows I need to catch up on!

Anyway, Yuletide happened, and I got two lovely little Treasure Planet fics:

An ongoing skillset expansion (1186 words). Great conversation between Sarah and Amelia regarding baby woes, with wondeful irritation on Amelia's part at her offspring's lack of military precision.

In a quiet evening (1044 words). Another post-fic with Amelia and Doppler figuring out life with babies.

For my assignment I got to revisit one of my favourite childhood fantasy worlds, and have a good roll around in FAMILY FEELS.

Homecoming (5025 words) - Emelan - Tamora Pierce. I haven't had to give equal space to four main characters before, so this was an interesting challenge, but so much fun! I devoured every Tamora Pierce I could get my hands on in high school, and this is the first time I've written something in either universe.

And the treat I wrote was basically me enjoying Diaval being such a snark XD

raise that bird up high (1907 words) - Maleficent (2014). Long-suffering Diaval is dragged into more adventures with Maleficent. Plus dragons!

SO I SUBMITTED MY HONOURS THESIS YESTERDAY

... and now I have actual FREE TIME again! For doing important things like sleeping and signing up for Yuletide!!!

(And eating lots of celebratory chocolate, naturally)

The PhD can wait for six months or so, methinks ...

So I just found out we're going to be playing a medley of How to Train Your Dragon music in my band!!

ONLY ONE OF MY FAVOURITE MOVIE SOUNDTRACKS EVER

(and trumpets get the tune a lot)

...AND I'M SO EXCITED!!!

It looks like productiveness comes in a rush - I've managed to finish a story that properly fits into a fandom! (A rare event outside of Yuletide ...) It has no regard for canon continuity or 'logical plot', but that's what fanfiction is for, right? :D

Title:
Comp Psy
Fandom: X-Men (Movieverse)
Rating: Teen and Up (some violence and swearing)
Wordcount: 3036
Summary: A young man is caught between two opposing sides in a mutant fight.

So my summer research project on fossil beetles has now been published!!! True, it's a short paper in an obscure journal that specialises in taxonomic descriptions (i.e. not a huge important journal like Nature) BUT I am now an officially published author, like a real scientist!! And I'll probably get a second paper out of the project, too - this paper only describes one beetle, and I looked at lots.

This is nice timing, because I'm halfway through my Honours project and feeling a little bogged down with silly computer programs that keep crashing when I try to put my data through them *sigh* I think I'll spend the rest of today making pretty graphs instead ;)

It's also uni holidays for all the normal undergrads, so now instead of feeling smug at my lack of exams I'm trying not to feel envious at their time off ... though I have managed to see Spy and Jurassic World these last two weeks, so I guess I can't complain. (Great fun, both of them - definitely recommended!)

So my Honours project of delightful Aussie geckos has been owning my brain since February - not least because my supervisor is rather ambitious and it seems more like a PhD!! (I'll be doing that later. Probably. Best way to put off trying to find a job, amirite?)

BUT despite getting a sore shoulder and thumb from too much pipetting, the lab work is progressing nicely. Getting DNA out of lizards and onto your computer for making phylogenetic trees with is a long and complicated business, I am discovering. Mostly involving lots of pipetting. Though I was also wielding scalpels and burning ethanol at the beginning too, which is more exciting!

I have also been chipping away at my long WIP too, which I wasn't sure I'd have brain enough to do. The end is in sight! Goodness knows what I'll do with myself after it's done - probably produce twice as many never-to-be finished snippets *sigh* My TV-show-watching plans have gone out the window instead, which I guess is better priorities? :P

Luckily I was not too busy with uni to see Bell Shakespeare's As You Like It - very enjoyable cross-dressing romp with unexpectedly good singing thrown in! The plot seemed to be a mashup of Much Ado and Twelfth Night, but I can't blame the Bard for copying his own themes that work well. AND [personal profile] fahye  and I saw Avengers 2 - Australia has spoilers for America for once, haha! (Not that you'll find any here, never fear.) Now I really want the next X-men movie to come out :D Barring that, some fic exploring the new team members . . .
laurel_crown: ([Avatar] zuko)
It's finally here, the big scary Honours year when I find out if I'm cracked up for scientific research! Looking good, so far - I have a very nice supervisor, and very cute animals to focus my project on! (Geckos, people. GECKOS!! Unlikely to still be alive, for the most part, but still SO CUTE).

I'll just have to hope my brain can cope with an extra-long year of study - once again I'm working at CSIRO (this time getting paid, thank goodness), this time on fossilised beetles! Whole different kettle of fish here, as they're rather crumbly and I'm terrified of destroying the 150-million-something-year-old fossils o.O At least they're longer than a millimetre this time!

And, of course, it wouldn't be summer holidays if I wasn't watching the wonderful Boxing Day releases - Hobbit 3, thoroughly enjoyable finale (especially the bit with Billy Connolly! No idea what he was doing there, but he was HILARIOUS). Planning to see Big Hero 6 with [personal profile] fahye this arvo, can't wait!

I did Yuletide again, though it was a near thing - I wasn't sure if I'd have time to do my recipient justice with my CSIRO job taking up so much time. But I signed up, and naturally, my assignment was released just before my last round of uni exams. It was VERY hard convincing my brain to memorise parasite life cycles instead of romping around with the Mad Hatter >.>

First, though, my incredible gift:

But Love Is the Sky and I Am for You (2910 words) - The Book Thief - Markus Zusak. Dear GOD (or should that be Death?), this fic is beautifully written. I asked for Liesel and Max healing by making stories together, and that's exactly what I got. Also, largely thanks to Zusak being an Aussie too, they get to heal in the glorious Australian sunshine!

My main story was mostly jotted down in a notebook during my mad rush 5 days of exams - and then typed up afterwards. I adore Hatter, though, so I didn't mind him distracting me from uniwork too much.

dare you to move (like today never happened) (4051 words) - Alice (2009). I love this show to pieces, but I've never written fic for it before. My recipient just wanted some background, so I picked my favourite character and went for it!

Once again, I only wrote one treat - another crossover, between Black Books and Good Omens. Because I saw the prompt and thought 'hey, I'm sure there's a bit in Good Omens about Aziraphale being a bad-tempered bookshop owner'. And my brain said HEY PRESTO.

From One Professional To Another (727 words) - Black Books/Good Omens. This was SO MUCH FUN to write, I was making myself laugh the whole way through. More fandoms I love but haven't written in before - I really must write more from Crowley's POV, he is delightful.

Hmm, resolutions - I could aim to finish my longest WIP, but with an Honours thesis to do as well that might be tricky. I definitely intend to watch all of Legend of Korra as soon as possible, once I've finished with Torchwood. Oh yes, and another one, courtesy of my ice skating coach - 2015 will be the year of landing double jumps on one foot, apparently. I can already do one, sort of - only another four to go!

My final semester of uni kicks off tomorrow - FINAL semester of coursework!! I do have Honours next year, so I'm not graduating yet, but DEAR GOD I am feeling old (yes, I know I shouldn't yet :P) I'd probably be less stressed if the two courses that are clashing with each other would actually put some information up on their websites, but we are talking about academics here >.>

However, the BEST way to forget about incoming-uni-worries is to go and see a production of Legally Blonde for the first time!! [personal profile] fahye and I had only ever seen her dodgy MTV copy of it, so seeing the musical live with the best local amateur theatre types in it was FANTASTIC. I even ran into my old trumpet teacher, who normally does Classical stuff - just goes to show the power of musicals :D Particularly the type where the songs will NOT stay out of your head!

So I'll probably be very quiet again for a while - bogged down in uni stuff rather than holiday laziness :P I'll try my best not to put any gruesome details from my Parasitology course up here, anyway!
laurel_crown: ([DW] who?)
I realised that I haven't posted anything here for a while, probably thanks to my wonderful plan of doing TWO research projects this semester (one course-length, one little extension thingo) as well as three courses, and that took up most of my brain until a few weeks ago. But I've been reminded recently that exams (and, therefore, HOLIDAYS) are not that far away, and since it feels like winter here already, I thought it was time for an update.

So, uni - massively busy, of course, but my big research project involves THROWING CHEESE AT MAGPIES. You have NO IDEA how much fun it is to tramp around campus with a speaker on a tripod, grated mozzarella, and a mysteriously shaped green mesh apparatus and know you are doing COMPLETELY LEGITIMATE scientific research. While everyone else thinks you're a complete loony, including other biologists. Behavioural ecology, people, it's a wonderful field (except when said magpies fly off and will not return, even when you're offering LOTS of cheese. That bit was frustrating.)

And despite the magpies having their own ideas about how the experiment should go (and noisy miners stealing the cheese) we got significant results! YAY! And the beetle taxonomic paper I was helping write in January came back from the reviewers, who said it was 'acceptable with minor revisions'. Which my supervisor said was awesome for the first submission of a first paper! So I'm going to be published soon :D

As for the creative side of things, I finally managed to watch Rise of the Guardians, which now owns my brain whenever uni-related matters are set aside. Or rather, my usual sorta-AU-with-original-characters loosely based on the movie currently owns my brain, but hey. It gives me an excuse to research Baba Yaga and other random European folklore beings that appeared in my childhood literature. Said story is, of course, now growing at an alarming rate while the uni assignments wait to pounce. The powerful female characters are also multiplying rapidly, which probably isn't a bad thing.

AND finally I'm trying to bring some of my uni friends along to Supanova, since they've never been, but the tickets won't go on sale!! The 6th of May is 'early May', dammit, take my money already! I am VERY excited about John Barrowman being there :D Though I'm not sure what to cosplay as this year, since yet again I will have exams right around Supanova so I won't have much spare time for costume consideration!
laurel_crown: (Black books)
In the best tradition of Australian summer, instead of sweltering outside in frankly ridiculous temperatures, I'm knocking some movies off my must-see list!

First up: more Richard Armitage magic in the second Hobbit movie, along with excellent barrel-riding and dragon shenanigans and Stephen Fry being . . . Stephen Fry FTW!! (How was I not informed he was in it?? It did make a nice surprise though!) So, naturally, having seen it last weekend with Mum (after everyone else in the family abandoned the collapsed let's-see-it-together-after-Christmas plan and saw it before us) - I'm going to see it again! In the spirit of educating my poor school friends who have not seen either movie, of course :P I'm providing the first Hobbit (extended edition, thanks to [personal profile] fahye!)

[personal profile] fahye  and I went to see Frozen a few days ago, and thoroughly enjoyed Idina Menzel singing Defying Gravity Let it Go (and, you know, the rest of the movie). The rest of the audience were mostly under 10 years old but DISNEY IS FOR EVERYONE, DAMMIT.

And then at home I've watched Oblivion (predictable as hell but so PRETTY), the Great Gatsby (not as drowned in hip-hop as we were told, thank goodness - just more Baz Luhrmann sparkle!) and the Curious Case of Benjamin Button (good but so hard to understand what they're saying! Everyone has strong accents, and are usually drunk or dying or all of the above!)

Orphan Black's finally aired here, on a ridiculous channel - looks entertaining thus far. But Sherlock s3 isn't here yet and I want a drunk Sherlock deducing egg chairs RIGHT NOW!! *sigh* Though, as a friend pointed out, it'll be so long waiting for the next series it's probably good to delay watching this one a little >.>

hello 2014!

laurel_crown: (Peacock)
So now it's 2014 and I'm officially halfway through my degree, with no idea what it's leading up to (but enjoying the ride). WOOT!

I'm making the most of this week to watch various TV shows (still continuing my Supernatural education, up to season 5 now!) and trawl through the Yuletide sea of awesome stories :D Next week it'll be back to my research project (no summer job this year, haha!) to describe a new genus and species of small brown beetle!

No, no, it's more fun than it sounds. I get to publish a full taxonomic paper in a scientific journal - if I can write it properly, that is :P Although said beetle IS ridiculously tiny (less than a millimetre long, dammit - thank goodness for microscopes!), it's kinda fun poking at one with pins to pull it apart without smashing it entirely (mixed success thus far).

Anyway, now the rest of the world is in 2014, Yuletide reveals are up and I can gush about my wonderful gifts! 2013 was my second Yuletide and even MORE awesome than the first because I got three treats as well as the most heart-wrenching-yet-hilarious S&A main gift!

Full of Promise and Potential (3615 words) - Slings & Arrows - OH GOD this fic is so incredibly true to canon. Beautiful snippets of Darren and Geoffrey being, well, themselves, finding their own styles by ridiculing each other's.

alike in dignity (1108 words) - Slings & Arrows - an immensely funny little treat from Darren's POV. I couldn't really imagine his headspace before, myself, but this is PERFECT.

Names, Rings and Under Things (1893 words) - Kingkiller Chronicles - I asked for Auri backstory and I got it, complete with her take on some of her and Kvothe's conversations! Helped fill in the gaps.

Conspiring for Happiness (100 words) - Italian Job (2003) - I adore this movie, and this cute little drabble managed to catch Stella's badassery admirably.

And finally, my own stories - didn't manage to do more than one treat this time around, despite best intentions! Must do better next Yuletide.

incertae sedis (2854 words) - Are You Alice? - yes, that is Latin, I couldn't resist :D I seem to have a weak spot for Alice-inspired fandoms, particularly when they come furnished with messed up Alices and arguments aplenty. And throwing in a tiny crossover I knew the recipient would like was tons of fun!

awake and unafraid (962 words) - Bourne Movies - I told myself this was a Madness fic (i.e. under 1k) and just managed to restrain it! My brain appears to be wired to producing Bourne crossover treats - this one's within fandom, a little Jason-meets-Aaron/Marta fun. Thanks to [personal profile] fahye, rescuer of missing bags, for the hasty beta!

So I was waiting for the bus home this afternoon when a beetle flew into my sunglasses - and clung on!

My fellow entomophile friend Rosa (who did Invertebrate Zoology with me) and I proceeded to coo over it and try to figure out what it was. Meanwhile our entomophobe friend was backing away . . .

Now, thanks to the omniscient Google images, I have decided it was a tortoise beetle:

Like this, but more orangey )

All this reminded me that I had found a brown lacewing (Order Neuroptera, Genus Micromus for the biologically inclined) in the kitchen the other day!

Very cute, about 15mm )

But you wouldn't want to mess with the larva if you were that small! )

Luckily I saw it was not, in fact, a cupboard moth before I squished it :P Can't wait for uni term to end (almost there, just got to get through exams) - then I can spend the summer describing beetles at CSIRO!!

ETA: Wikipedia (via Rosa) informs me said tortoise beetle was indeed more orangey than the first photo, being probably Paropsis atomaria

Which looks like this )

So here it is, folks, my long-lost Doctor Who fanfic is finally finished! Just in time for Yuletide :D It doesn't contain all that much running, but still (I hope) plenty of excitement!
